Fajr end time in the UK: when does Fajr finish?

Fajr, the dawn prayer, ends at sunrise. This page shows when that is in each UK city we publish, how the time between Fajr and sunrise changes through the year, and what it means for suhoor.

The short answer

Fajr starts at dawn
When the first light of true dawn appears on the eastern horizon. We calculate it with the sun 18° below the horizon.
Fajr ends at sunrise
The sunrise time on every AllPrayerTime.uk page is also the end of Fajr. We publish no separate “Fajr end” time.

Today, Monday 19 October 2026, in London: Fajr starts at 05:40 and ends at sunrise, 07:31. Fajr start and end for your city.

Fajr is also when suhoor ends

In Ramadan the fast begins at Fajr, so the time Fajr starts is the time suhoor ends. AllPrayerTime.uk publishes one Fajr time all year and no separate, earlier “Imsak”. Our Fajr already uses the 18° twilight angle, which is earlier than the 15° angle some timetables use, so it is the cautious choice for suhoor. See the Ramadan timetables for suhoor and iftar times by city.

How long Fajr lasts through the year

The time between the start of Fajr and sunrise changes a lot through the year. Around midwinter it is 124–142 minutes; around midsummer it is only 54–120 minutes, depending on the city. Nights are long in winter and short in summer, so the gap is widest in winter.

Start times, not congregation (jamāʿah) times. Each city page shows the full day, the monthly timetable and both Asr times.
* On this date the 18° dawn is not reached, or is too early to be reasonable, so Fajr is the one-seventh-of-the-night estimate. The city page shows the angle-based time alongside.

Fajr in the UK summer

Around midsummer, the sun does not go far enough below the horizon in the UK for the 18° dawn to be reached, or it is reached unreasonably early. On those dates we use the “one-seventh of the night” rule: Fajr is never earlier than the start of the last seventh of the night. This is a product calculation choice, not a religious ruling, and UK bodies do not agree a single method. Where it applies, the city page says so for that date and shows the angle-based time alongside. Read how it works on the methodology page.

What this page does not cover

  • Times shortly after sunrise (Ishraq, Ḍuḥā) and times when prayer is discouraged. We do not publish these yet; please ask your mosque or a scholar you trust.
  • Which prayers may be made up (qaḍāʾ) after Fajr has ended. That is a question for a scholar.

Why your mosque's Fajr times may be different

  • Start time or jamāʿah time. The times here are when Fajr begins and ends. A mosque's congregation usually prays some time after Fajr begins.
  • A different twilight angle. Some UK timetables use 15° or 16° rather than 18°, which puts Fajr noticeably later. Ours uses 18°.
  • A margin before sunrise. Some timetables print sunrise a minute earlier as a precaution. We publish sunrise as calculated, with no margin.

From 1 January 2027 the London and Ilford figures on this page are the London Unified Prayer Timetable's own published times, shown as published.
