On the Umm al-Qura calendar, Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027, Eid al-Fitr on Tuesday 9 March 2027 and Eid al-Adha on Sunday 16 May 2027. In the UK, however, many mosques begin each month by local moon sighting, so the date your mosque announces can be a day later. This guide gives the expected dates for the main Islamic occasions between now and the end of 2027, explains how they are decided, and shows how long the voluntary fasts of Arafah and Ashura will be in London, Manchester and Edinburgh.

The dates on this page are expected dates, not announcements. They are the Umm al-Qura calendar's dates, which we show on our Islamic calendar. We make no moon prediction of our own, and nothing here is a religious ruling. Follow your mosque's announcement.

How the dates are decided#

The Umm al-Qura calendar#

Umm al-Qura is the calendar published in Saudi Arabia. Wikipedia's summary of its rule since 2002 is that a month begins when the astronomical conjunction of the sun and moon happens before sunset and the moon sets after the sun at Mecca. It is a calculation: it fixes dates years ahead, which is why we can show them for 2027. It is not a sighting.

Moon sighting in the UK#

Many UK mosques begin each month by looking for the new moon. Wifaqul Ulama, which publishes UK moon-sighting announcements, says on its criteria page that local sighting in Britain is organised every month, and that it also relies on sightings from other countries (Morocco and South Africa among them). Its published criteria include that the moon must not set before the sun, and a minimum moon age, lag time and elongation, and that testimony without optical aid is required. That is why a UK month can begin a day after the Umm al-Qura date.

As an example of the cycle, as of 3 November 2026, Wifaqul Ulama's moon-sighting page urges Muslims in Britain to try to sight the moon for Jumada al-Akhirah 1448 on the evening of Monday 9 November 2026. Our calendar expects that month to begin on Wed 11 Nov 2026. We will not know until the announcement.

Eid al-Adha is not the day after Hajj in Britain, according to Wifaqul Ulama#

Wifaqul Ulama's page on Eid al-Adha says Eid al-Adha is on the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah by local moon sighting, and is not the day after Hajj in Britain. For the Day of Arafah, it says you fast on the 9th according to your own country. Other bodies and mosques in the UK may follow a different approach, and we do not rank them. Ask your mosque which one it follows.

Why the dates move about 11 days a year#

The Islamic year has 12 lunar months and lasts 354 or 355 days. The average lunar year is about 10.9 days shorter than the solar year. Ramadan therefore starts roughly 11 days earlier on the Gregorian calendar each year, and moves through all four seasons over about 33 years. For 2027, that puts Ramadan in February and March, and Eid al-Adha and Ashura in May and June, when UK days are long.

Our calendar covers the checked range up to the end of 2027. For 2027 we compared it day by day with the Umm al-Qura dates in the London Unified Prayer Timetable. Ramadan 1448 has 29 days on this calendar. A month is 29 or 30 days, and sighting can add a day.

Fasting on Arafah and Ashura#

Two fasts are recommended for those who are not on Hajj, and the hadith below are the reason. They are quoted from Sahih Muslim (book of fasting, hadith 1162) and are for you to read with your scholars, not for us to interpret.

  • Arafah. Abu Qatadah reported that the Prophet ﷺ was asked about fasting on the day of Arafah (the 9th of Dhul-Hijjah), and said: "It expiates the sins of the preceding year and the coming year" (Sahih Muslim 1162).

  • Ashura. In the same hadith, asked about fasting on the day of Ashura (the 10th of Muharram), he said: "It expiates the sins of the preceding year" (Sahih Muslim 1162).

  • The 9th too. Ibn Abbas reported that the Prophet ﷺ said he would fast on the 9th if he lived to the next year, but he died before it came (Sahih Muslim 1134).

The voluntary fasts run from Fajr to Maghrib, like Ramadan. This is how long they will be on the expected dates, using the times we publish. London uses the London Unified Prayer Timetable's Fajr and the other cities use our calculated Fajr.

On the Day of Arafah (15 May 2027) the fast is 17h 25m in London and 17h 04m in Manchester. On Ashura (15 June 2027) it is 18h 40m in London, 17h 59m in Manchester and 18h 29m in Edinburgh, so Ashura falls near the longest days of the year. Compare it with Ramadan 2027, which is in the cold half of the year: see Ramadan 2027 fasting hours in the UK.

What to do with these dates#

  • Treat the dates here as the plan, and your mosque's announcement as the answer.

  • If your mosque follows UK sighting, the Ramadan start may be one day later than 8 February 2027. See when does Ramadan 2027 start in the UK.

  • Look up any prayer time for a date on your city page, and the Ramadan timetables for the fasting month.

Frequently asked questions#

When is Eid al-Fitr 2027 in the UK?#

Expected on Tuesday 9 March 2027 on the Umm al-Qura calendar. If Ramadan is a day later in your mosque's sighting, Eid may be a day later too.

When is Eid al-Adha 2027 in the UK?#

Expected on Sunday 16 May 2027, the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah, with the Day of Arafah the day before (Saturday 15 May 2027). Wifaqul Ulama says that in Britain Eid al-Adha follows local sighting rather than the day after Hajj.

When is Ashura 2027?#

Expected on Tuesday 15 June 2027, the 10th of Muharram 1449, with the 9th on Monday 14 June 2027.

When is the Islamic New Year 2027?#

1 Muharram 1449 is expected on Sunday 6 June 2027.

Why does my mosque give a different date?#

Because it may begin the month by sighting the moon rather than by the Umm al-Qura calculation, which can differ by a day.

Is this page a moon-sighting announcement?#

No. It shows expected dates from a calendar. The announcement comes from your mosque or your moon-sighting body.
