Edinburgh Prayer Times

These prayer times are calculated for Edinburgh, in Scotland, at 55.9521° N, 3.1965° W, in the Europe/London timezone, so they follow the clocks when British Summer Time begins and ends. They are produced by AllPrayerTime's own calculation engine from those coordinates, following the published methodology, and are not copied from another timetable.

The furthest north of the cities on this site

Edinburgh lies more than two degrees of latitude further north than any other city published here, and that shapes its whole year. At the June solstice the sun is up for about seventeen and a half hours, nearly an hour longer than in London; at the December solstice it is up for under seven hours, nearly an hour less. Maghrib moves from about 3:41pm in mid-December to about 10:06pm in late June. The sun also reaches its highest point here a little over twelve minutes later than in London, so Dhuhr is later all year, and in June Maghrib falls around forty minutes later than it does in the capital. A timetable from much further south will not fit Edinburgh at either end of the year.

Standard and Hanafi Asr

Both Asr times are listed every day: Standard (Mithl 1) and Hanafi (Mithl 2). In Edinburgh the two are about twenty-four minutes apart in mid-December, and a little over an hour and a quarter apart in mid-June. Neither is presented as the correct one — follow the convention you or your mosque use.

Short summer nights

For about three months in summer the usual twilight angles are out of reach. From the first week of May to the second week of August the sun does not sink the 18° below the horizon that Fajr is based on, and from the second week of May to the first week of August it does not reach the 17° used for Isha. Around the June solstice, Fajr is published at about 3:32am and Isha at about 10:58pm.

When an angle-based time is unavailable, or would fall outside the approved limit, the one-seventh-of-the-night rule sets the published time. Taking the night as sunset to sunrise, Fajr is not placed earlier than the start of its last seventh, and Isha not later than the end of its first seventh; the two are handled separately. In Edinburgh the limit applies to Fajr from the second week of February until the start of November, and to Isha from the last week of February to the middle of October — the longest stretch of any city on this site. From early November to early February it is not needed. Each date where it has been applied says so, and shows the angle-based time beside it where one exists. On a few days in early May and early August that angle-based Isha falls after midnight, and it is marked as the next day.

For congregational prayer, follow your local mosque. Mosques may use different angles, margins or Asr conventions, so jama'ah times — especially Fajr and Isha — can differ from the calculated times on this page. If a time here looks wrong, please report it.
